INTRODUCTION

As a part of the NYU Stern School of Business, The John A. Paulson Auditorium is a 470-person capacity hall frequently used as a high-profile event space for hosting business and policy conferences.

Monolith Systems assists the NYU Stern School of Business in the design, installation, and integration of classroom and public space      AV presentation equipment.

CHALLENGE

Monolith Systems was selected to update the AV equipment racks and control systems programming of the John A. Paulson Auditorium after a recent renovation with a poor design.  “The racks in the projection booth and the podium areas were in need of rewiring,” said Rob Fleischacker, President of Monolith Systems.

“There was so much unused equipment that needed to be removed,” said Kevin Keller, Director of Technical Operations at Monolith Systems.  “It was cluttering the racks and making the auditorium very difficult to service,” added Keller.

Design and Development

All rack equipment was removed, inter-rack wiring replaced, and the systems reconfigured to reflect the approved signal flow.  “We estimate that we removed over $200,000 worth of unnecessary equipment,” said Keller.  “We were able to restore order to wiring that was already in place.  This dramatically improves our ability to service the system in the future should the need arise,” he added.

The system capabilities were drastically increased with the installation of a few low-cost additional products. The Crestron control system program was updated to incorporate all of the changes made in the auditorium.  Once installed, the existing loudspeaker columns were tuned to optimal sound within the room, something that was neglected during the original installation.

“High-quality programming is essential to a system of this size.  All programming is done on a custom basis, there is no ‘one-size’ fits all solution, especially for such a high-profile room,” Keller added.

Results

“The system was upgraded to its current configuration during a winter break more than four years ago, with results that speak for themselves….not one service call in that time,” said Keller.  “We are very proud of this renovation and the ability to offer NYU Stern the high- quality, reliable auditorium they deserve,” added Fleischacker.
